Over the past weekend, the Sahuarita High School Mustang wrestling team showcased their prowess at the Conflict at Cleveland Invitational in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. This event saw the participation of over 50 teams hailing from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas.
Impressive Results and Victories
Despite stiff competition, the Sahuarita High School boys’ team achieved a commendable third position in the overall standings. Notably, individual wrestlers Daniel Guerrero, Christian Lopez, and Gabriel Gallardo emerged victorious in their respective divisions. Additionally, Miyah Palacios of the SHS wrestling team claimed the championship title in her weight division during the girls’ tournament.
Sahuarita Showdown: A Rivalry Unfolds
Looking ahead, an exciting event, the Sahuarita Showdown, is scheduled where Sahuarita High School will face off against Walden Grove High School in a highly anticipated wrestling clash. The event will commence with the junior varsity (JV) team match at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity teams competing at 5 p.m. Notably, middle school wrestlers can attend this thrilling showdown free of charge.
Walden Grove High School’s Mile High Challenge Triumph
On a different front, the Walden Grove High School wrestling team showcased their skills at the Mile High Challenge held on Dec. 29-30. The team secured an impressive third-place finish with a total of 179 points. Noteworthy achievements include five individual medalists: Brett Bates (third place), Zack Bates (champion), Pedro Mendoza (champion), Enzo Morales (champion), and Sal Nieves (third place).
Dominate Wrestling Excellence at Raise UP Rumble
In the world of Dominate Wrestling, several athletes took part in the Raise UP Rumble, displaying exceptional talent and determination. Among the standout performers were Derek Wade (first place), Jasmine Buck (two first-place wins), Benjamin Steward (second place), Maximus Smith (second place), Oliver Leitz (second place), and Alfie Steward (third place), each clinching medals in their respective categories.
Educators’ Recognition at Barstool Arizona Bowl
Shifting focus momentarily from the wrestling mat, Walden Grove High School teacher Carl Nelson received well-deserved recognition at the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl football game on Dec. 30. Nelson, along with other esteemed teachers, was honored as one of the recipients of the Extra Yard for Teachers grant. This grant acknowledges educators who consistently go the extra mile for their students. The on-field acknowledgment served as a testament to Nelson’s dedication and commitment to education.
Copper Hills Little League Evaluations
Switching gears, the Copper Hills Little League announced upcoming evaluations for the minors and majors divisions throughout the month. These evaluations are mandatory for all minors and majors baseball and softball players.
Evaluation Schedule at Anamax Park
Evaluations will take place at Anamax Park on the following dates:
- Jan. 16, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. (baseball)
- Jan. 18, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. (baseball and softball)
- Jan. 20, 8:20 to 11:30 a.m. (baseball and softball)
These sessions serve as a crucial step for players aspiring to participate in the minors and majors divisions within the Copper Hills Little League, ensuring a fair and competitive selection process.
