Sahuarita Unified School District Receives $50 Million from Taxpayers

On Tuesday night, voters in the Sahuarita Unified School District (SUSD) approved a $50 million bond. This means that the district will get money to do important projects. These projects include building a small theater at Walden Grove High School, improving security cameras, replacing the grass on athletic fields with artificial turf, and constructing new classrooms. These are some of the things the money will be used for.

The vote results showed that 2,525 people voted “yes” for the bond, while 1,891 people voted “no.” This means that the bond passed with 57% of the votes in favor.

The Pima County Recorder’s Office sent ballots to 20,247 voters. Only about 22% of the voters sent back their ballots.

SUSD has plans for five main areas of projects: safety, technology, fixing up old buildings, building new things, and getting new furniture and equipment.

People who own a home worth $200,000 will have to pay an extra $162 in taxes every year because of the bond.

The district said that they won’t need to increase the school tax rate because they have some old debt they’re refinancing at a low interest rate. This will save them money. In 2021, they fixed their 2015 and 2010 debt. In 2017, they fixed their 2005 and 2007 debt.

SUSD has some debt, which is like money they owe. They owe a total of $44,310,708, and about half of it will be paid back in 2027. The rest will be paid back in 2036.

In other news:

  • Tucson’s Mayor Regina Romero, who is a Democrat, won the election with 61% of the vote. She defeated the Republican challenger Janet Wittenbraker, who had 31% of the vote. There were also other candidates.
  • Three Democrats won the seats on the Tucson City Council: Lane Santa Cruz, Paul Cunningham, and Nikki Lee.
  • There was a vote about increasing the salaries of Tucson’s mayor and council members. The results were very close, with only 557 more “yes” votes out of about 77,000 votes cast. If it passes, council members will earn the same as county supervisors, and the mayor will earn 1.25 times that amount. Right now, council members make $24,000 a year, and the mayor makes $42,000.
