William Allen Harpring: Legacy of Service and Devotion

William Allen Harpring, affectionately known as Bill, left an indelible mark on the world during his 92 years of life. Born in Paris, IL, to John Lawrence Harpring and Ruth Elizabeth (Twigg) Harpring, Bill’s journey was one of resilience, service, and dedication to family.

Early Life and Military Service

Bill’s early years were shaped by humble beginnings. He began his career as a paperboy in Paris, IL, and later worked at Montgomery Ward. In 1952, he answered the call to serve his country and joined the Army, rising to the rank of Sergeant and serving as a Medic during the Korean War. His commitment to duty and service defined his character.

Love and Education

In 1956, Bill married his hometown sweetheart, Marilyn, marking the beginning of a 67-year journey together. Bill pursued higher education, graduating in Industrial Arts and Mathematics from Indiana State University in 1957. His dedication to learning and teaching set the stage for a remarkable career.

A Teacher’s Legacy

In 1960, Bill and Marilyn settled in Greenfield, IN, where Bill dedicated 33 years of his life to teaching mathematics at Greenfield-Central High School. His impact on generations of students resonates to this day, with many remembering him as an inspiring educator.

Retirement and Pursuits in Green Valley, AZ

In 2005, Bill and Marilyn retired to Green Valley, AZ, where they embraced a new chapter of life. Bill found joy in various activities, including golf, billiards, shuffleboard, and basketball. He showcased his competitive spirit by participating in the Senior Olympics, proving that age was no barrier to staying active.

Community Involvement

Bill’s commitment to community extended beyond his professional life. He became a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6842 while attending Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Green Valley. His involvement in community initiatives highlighted his belief in the importance of contributing to the well-being of those around him.

Family Man and Master Woodcrafter

Bill’s true legacy lies in his role as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Despite facing personal challenges, he remained a pillar of strength for his family. His acts of kindness, patience, and his sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him.

As a master woodcrafter, Bill’s artistic talents shone through the furniture and boxes he crafted for family and friends. His creations stand as tangible expressions of his love and craftsmanship.

Reflecting on a Life Well-Lived

On December 13, 2023, Bill peacefully passed away at home after a long illness. Though he is no longer with us, the impact of his life continues to resonate. William Allen Harpring’s legacy is one of service, love, and the enduring influence he had on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.
