High school seniors and juniors face numerous challenges as they prepare for life after high school. One significant challenge is the pursuit of scholarships, a process that the Rotary Club of Green Valley has identified as an area for improvement.
Identifying the Need for Improvement
Rotarian Ron Munkres initiated the mentorship program after observing a lack of scholarship application preparedness among students. Drawing inspiration from a similar program in Oregon, Munkres proposed the idea to the Sahuarita Unified School District and local Rotary Clubs.
Collaborative Efforts to Enhance Scholarship Applications
The Rotary Clubs collaborated to secure a grant from Rotary International for the mentorship program, which was launched in November. Monthly sessions at Sahuarita and Walden Grove high schools involve Rotarians discussing careers, post-secondary education plans, and scholarship application criteria with students.
Tracking Success and Benefits for Students
Munkres expressed optimism about the program’s success, highlighting plans to track the number of students applying for and receiving scholarships in May. College and Career counselor Megan Anderson emphasized the benefits for students, including better preparation for the fast-paced senior year.
Enhancing Essay Writing and Social Skills
The program not only aids students in essay writing but also provides an opportunity for socialization with adults in the community. Students like Kevin Reyes appreciate the guidance received, stating that it has offered valuable insights into the steps needed for a successful college career.
Individualized Support for Career Goals
Logan Yslas, aspiring to become a surgeon, credits the mentorship program for teaching him how to write stronger essays. The program aligns with the Career and Technical Education goals, providing individualized support for students’ career aspirations.
A Glimpse into Student Experiences
Junior Olivia Velez, aspiring to become a veterinarian, shared how the program has helped her prepare for college interviews and applications. The mentorship sessions focus on current school activities, college preferences, and proper application techniques.
Meeting CTE Goals and Future Plans
Career and Technical Education Director Josh Fields commended the program for contributing to broader CTE goals. Fields emphasized the significance of having community members share their experiences to help students navigate their individual pathways.
Beyond Scholarship Essays: Mock Interviews and Industry-Specific Presentations
Looking ahead, the Rotary Clubs plan to organize mock interviews and bring industry-specific presentations to students. These initiatives aim to further enhance students’ preparedness for their future endeavors.
Serving the Community: The Rotarians’ Commitment
Rotarian Ron Munkres emphasized the Rotary Clubs’ commitment to serving the community through the mentorship program. As a service club, they strive to make a positive impact by ensuring students are better prepared for their academic and professional journeys.
